Genus
Heterodon

North American Hognose Snakes

Nordamerikanische Hakennasennattern

Nordamerikanske Trynesnoge

1801 Heterodon Latreille (type species: Heterodon platyrhinos Latreille 1802#)
Contents: 5 species, of which 2 (40.0%) are endemic.
Endemism: 0% 100%
Distribution: North America.
Reported from: Canada (Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan), Mexico (Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Jalisco, Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas), USA (Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York [incl. Long Island], North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming).

Heterodon gloydi

Dusty Hognose Snake

Texas-Hakennasennatter

Texas-trynesnog

1952 Heterodon nasicus gloydi Edgren
Heterodon gloydi Werler & Dixon 2000

Remarks: Werler & Dixon (2000) regarded gloydi as a separate species, followed by several authors (e.g., Crother (ed.) 2008, 2012; Ballinger, Lynch & Smith 2010), however, Smith, Chiszar, Eckerman & Walley (2003), followed by Dixon (2013), retained it under nasicus, although suggesting it might be valid. In spite of having been reported from other states, gloydi is herein considered restricted to eastern Texas, following Werler & Dixon (2000) and Smith, Chiszar, Eckerman & Walley (2003). A record of gloydi from Arkansas (Means 1976; repeated by Vance 1985), subsequently proved to be a platirhinos (Irwin 2001).
Distribution: USA (Texas).

Heterodon kennerlyi

Mexican Hognose Snake

Nordmexicanische Hakennasennatter

Nordmexicansk Trynesnog

1860 Heterodon kennerlyi Kennicott
Heterodon nasicus kennerlyi Bocourt 1886

Remarks: Revalidated as a separate species by Smith, Chiszar, Eckerman & Walley (2003), although still retained as a subspecies of nasicus by some authors (e.g., Brennan & Holycross 2006 [by implication]).
Distribution: Mexico (Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Jalisco, Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas), USA (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas).

Heterodon nasicus

Western Hognose Snake, Plains Hognose Snake (former subspecies nasicus)

Westliche Hakennasennatter

Vestlig Trynesnog

1852 Heterodon nasicus Baird & Girard
1853 Heterodon cognatus Baird & Girard (Schmidt 1953)

Remarks: Previously included gloydi and kennerlyi. Mexican and Arizona records refer to kennerlyi. Both species occur in New Mexico and Texas. A single Wisconsin record from 1946 (Casper 2008).
Distribution: Canada (Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan), USA (Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Wyoming).

1803 Coluber heterodon Daudin (Schmidt 1953)
1803 Scytale niger Daudin [rejected; not Scytale neuwiedii var. nigrum Duméril, Bibron & Duméril 1854] (Smith & Chiszar 1989)
1835 Coluber thraso Harlan (Schmidt 1953)
1836 Heterodon annulatus Troost (Schmidt 1953)
1836 Heterodon tigrinus Troost (Schmidt 1953)
1853 Heterodon atmodes Baird & Girard (Schmidt 1953)
1903 Heterodon browni Stejneger (Edgren 1957; Blem 1981)
Heterodon platyrhinos browni Schmidt 1953
1932 Heterodon contortrix Allen (attributed to Linnaeus) (Reptile Database, viewed 2 Jan 2016)

Remarks: Specific epithet frequently spelled platyrhinos in older literature.
Distribution: Canada (Ontario), USA (Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York [incl. Long Island], North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, Wisconsin).
