Family status was given by Frost & Etheridge (1989), who included three subfamilies (Leiocephalinae, Liolaeminae, Tropidurinae). The three subfamilies were subsequently given status as separate families by Frost, Etheridge, Janies & Titus (2001). Distribution:  South America. Reported from: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador (incl. Galapagos Islands), French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Trinidad & Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela.
