Previously included dorsolateralis, kheriensis, smithi, and superfluens. The two former are now considered separate species, whereas the two latter forms are regarded as synonyms of fasciolatus. Records from China refer to fasciolatus (Zhang, Jang, Li, Hou & Rao 2011). Although cyclurus, according to David, Cox, Pauwels, Chanhome & Thirakhupt (2004), is restricted to Bangladesh, India, and Burma (subsequently recorded also in Bhutan), they nevertheless listed the species in their checklist of snakes found in Thailand, presumably either representing dorsolateralis, which they considered a synonym of cyclurus, or based on the invalid designation of a neotype from Bangkok by Campden-Main (1970), which was discussed by David, Das & Vogel (2011), who also designated a new neotype, thus correcting Campden-Main's error.
