Formerly regarded as part of the family
Colubridae
(e.g., Smith 1943; Loveridge 1957; Guibe 1958; Broadley 1983; Leviton, Anderson, Adler & Minton 1992; Chippaux 2001; Zug, Vitt & Caldwell 2001).
Some authors (e.g., Zaher, Grazziotin, Cadle, Murphy, Moura-Leite & Bonatto 2009; Zug, Vitt & Caldwell 2001; Wallach, Williams & Boundy 2014; Meng & al. 2016) recognize a further division of the
family with as many as six additional families proposed:
Atractaspididae,
Aparallactidae,
Prosymnidae,
Psammophiidae,
Pseudoxyrhophiidae,
Pseudaspididae.
Whether all or some of these proposed families will eventually become generally accepted or not remains to be seen.
For conservative reasons, they are retained as part of Lamprophiidae (sensu lato), pending further research.
